Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers about mini-split cost, sizing, installation and upkeep.
Cost
How much does a mini-split installation cost?
Most single-room mini-split installs run $1,900–$6,200, including the unit and a standard install. The size of the room matters most: a room up to 200 sq ft typically runs $1,900–$3,800, and a room over 1,000 sq ft typically runs $3,200–$6,200. These are estimates, not quotes.
What can add to the price?
A new electrical circuit is the most common added cost, at $300–$1,200 if your space needs one. High ceilings, poor insulation and strong direct sun can also call for a larger unit, which costs more.
Do you offer free estimates?
Yes. Estimates are free with no obligation, and you'll know the price before any work starts. For a quick ballpark, our online estimator gives you a price range in a few clicks.
Do you offer discounts or promotions?
We run promotions from time to time. Check our Facebook and Instagram pages for current offers, or ask us when you request an estimate.
Sizing
What size mini-split do I need?
Room size is the starting point: about 6,000 BTU for up to 200 sq ft, 12,000 BTU for 400–600 sq ft and 24,000 BTU for 800–1,000 sq ft. Ceiling height, insulation, sun and climate can push that up or down. Our estimator accounts for all of these.
Is a bigger mini-split better?
No. An oversized unit cools the room quickly and shuts off before it removes much humidity, which matters in a place like Houston. A correctly sized unit runs longer at low speed, which is more comfortable and uses less energy.
What is a multi-zone mini-split system?
A multi-zone system connects several indoor units to one outdoor unit, so each room has its own temperature control. It's a good fit when different rooms need different temperatures.
Installation
How long does a mini-split installation take?
A standard single-zone install usually takes about a day. Multi-zone systems and jobs that need a new electrical circuit can take longer.
Where should a mini-split be installed?
Our technicians will help you find the best spot for your space. We go over the details with you, including where the air needs to reach, how the drain line will run and what sits below the indoor unit, and we stay in touch from start to finish.
Does a mini-split need ductwork?
No. A mini-split connects the indoor and outdoor units through a line set that runs through a small hole in the wall, so there are no ducts to install.
Can you install mini-splits in garages, RVs and tiny homes?
Yes. Along with homes and commercial spaces, we install mini-splits in garages, RVs, tiny homes, ADUs, guest houses and other small spaces.
Do you handle commercial projects?
Yes. We work on commercial spaces, steel buildings, warehouses and bulk installs with multiple units.
Owning a mini-split
Do mini-splits heat as well as cool?
Most do. The majority of mini-splits are heat pumps, so one system handles both cooling and heating. If you need heat in very cold weather, check the unit's low-temperature rating.
Are mini-splits energy efficient?
Yes. A mini-split has no ducts to lose air through, and it only conditions the room you're using. That's why it can cost less to run than cooling a whole house to fix one room.
How long does a mini-split last?
Around 15 to 20 years is typical with regular maintenance. Clean filters and a yearly tune-up make the biggest difference.
What maintenance does a mini-split need?
Clean the filters every month or two, and have a technician do a tune-up once a year. In humid areas, the tune-up also keeps the drain line clear, which prevents leaks.
What should I avoid putting under a mini-split?
Avoid keeping computers, other electronics or anything water could damage directly under the indoor unit. A mini-split makes water as it cools, and that water normally drains outside through a hose. Problems are unlikely, but a clogged drain line or a refrigerant leak that freezes the coil can make water drip from the unit. If you see dripping or ice, turn the unit off and contact us.
